I spent the rest of my years in high school 8 out of 9 times without breakfast in the morning, lunch and dinner. After school it became a routine to go up the river to find fruits and coconuts for my lunch. I obtained my uniforms including my school belts and shoes from Astaphans by stealing. I also stole most of my stationery and books from the Cee Bee's Book Store and Paper Backs. The irony is later, I became a Police Officer and was confronted with a case of a young lady who's grandmother was standing next to her when she was caught stealing at Astaphans; I couldn't do it-I begged the owners to forgive her and let her go because she reminded me of my past.
However the most heart breaking situation for me whilst in high school was when I had to take the bus to school from Massacre to St. Joseph and back without any money to pay the driver. To accomplish that, I painfully sneak between other students to avoid being seen by the bus driver ...imagine doing this for five years because your parents could not afford to give you bus fare.
Today there are many parents and children that are faced with that same situation and I know they are in need of your help. We will put you in direct contact with a parent who is in desperate need of assistance with a school child. May God continue to bless and keep you. |
